Day 12 - New Orleans to Biloxi
This morning we had to pack up and leave our wonderful air bnb. Our New Orleans food quest hadn't quite finished because we hadn't had bananas foster yet. We decided that bananas fosters pancakes would be the way to go. We googled it and discovered that Another Broken Egg round the corner from the apartment had it on the menu so we headed straight there!
We knew that we were going out for lunch today so we decided to split one portion but it was still tons (see photo, yes they came with bacon). We sat outside for breakfast but shortly after we left it started to rain a wee bit. We pushed on with a wee walk round the garden district to see some big houses including Anne Rice's house and the house from American Gothic. It was a lovely wee walk about. Lots of the houses have gas lights on the porch.
When we got back in the car the rain got heavier then the thunder and lightening started. It got really heavy soon after as we were driving out of town and it's pretty much continued all day. It's pretty bad just now but should be ok by tomorrow hopefully.
Our first stop was when we re-entered Mississippi at the Welcome Centre. The Infinity Space Center is at the same location and they have quite a few things that you can see for free which was cool. They had an excellent sign at the entrance/exit, Infinity one way, beyond the other.
Soon we hit the coast and hypothetically it was lovely, white sand for miles. However, due to the weather we didn't get to enjoy it. Our lunch stop was the Tripplet-Day Drug Co in Gulfport. It is an old lunch counter in the back of a pharmacy and it was amazing. Proper old school. We grabbed a booth and K got one of the daily specials, ham and cabbage with 2 sides for $6.85, her sides were slaw and rice and gravy (weird). I had a pimento cheese sandwich with fries and we both agreed it was brilliant! A proper classic American experience. We pushed on and stopped at a books-a-million which is a big borders type book shop. We were in there for ages and K bought some comics (shocking!). There was a Yoghurt Mountain so we got some self-service fro-yo to recover from all the browsing. Yummy!
Because we love shopping, our next stop was the giant, tacky Sharkheads gift shop. The entrance is a giant shark mouth! When we got there there was a school trip visiting, we imagine they were meant to be doing something more fun by the beach til the rain let them down. Again, we were in there ages and K bought stuff.
We quickly popped into the Hard Rock Casino for the usual Jorna gifts but K was delighted to see a guitar previously owned by Dimebag from Pantera on display. Apparently, it was in the casino when Katrina destroyed it and was later found in the ocean!
Our stop tonight is the IP Biloxi Casino which is pretty nice. We've got a massive room on the 25th floor overlooking the water. Unfortunately, the terrible weather means that the view isn't great.
We beat the system by signing up for the casino loyalty card which meant we both got a free trip to the buffet! It should have cost us $46, including drink but instead we just left a $10 tip! Yaaass! And they say the house always wins.
The buffet was brilliant, southern food, bbq food, Asian food, prime rib, Italian food and so many puddings you can't even imagine. We both ate a wee bit too much but not as much as other people. There were people sitting with 5 plates of crab and I don't mean one plate at a time!
Post dinner we hit up the casino my favourite slot was the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one, we won and we lost but we spent less than our dinner should have been so we still won. We also went to the arcade where we played air hockey, skee ball, basketball and a few other things. I love a casino fun time!
We're back in the hotel now watching the lightening out of the window and the Late Show on tv. Hopefully we'll be able to enjoy the coast tomorrow.
Night y'all!
I'd love the shark shop, though it might dissuade me from venturing into the ocean. Was it the house from amaerican gothic, or American horror story? They are both good series. Hope k choose her comics wisely. This seems like a pretty packed day. And wtf, who would get any crab??? Yuck!! Was it graeme?
