Day 11 - New Orleans again

As per everyday,  I woke super early whilst k slept. After a wee while I snuck through to bake some fresh biscuits (pilsbury ones from a can it was no effort) but she woke up and came through before they were ready annoyingly. We put a wash on and settled down with hot biscuits to watch some Raising Hope. Wild party holiday times!

Once we headed out into the wild heat we headed up to Lafayette Cemetery No 1 which is a major tourist attraction and handily only a few blocks from our yard.

It was pretty busy with loads of tour geoups but it was still pretty cool. No-one is buried under ground here so it was all tombs, it was a bit like buffy.

Our plan for today was to stay in the local 'hood, Magazine St is miles long with loads of restaurants, shops, bars and coffee shops. Post Cemetery we were ready for a cold drinks and a blast of air con so we stopped at local chain CC 's for a wee coffee. Once we were refreshed we hit Magazine again for some shopping. Soon it was lunch time and we stopped at Joey K's which was recommended by our host, Food Network and the Internet. We shared a roast beef po boy and a chicken ceasar salad. It was really good but I think yesterday's po boy was better. The chicken on the salad was cajun which was appropriate for the area.

Back on Magazine and we wandered for ages, browsing and enjoying the architecture. The only problem was the heat, we were desperately trying to stay in the shade but it wasn't easy.

Our next stop was Hey! cafe where I just had a ginger ale and k had a nitro cold brew cos she's a hipster. It was a really cute cafe and reminded us of the coffee shops of San Francisco. There were a couple of vending machines where you get a plastic ball that dispensed tiny wee comics. Similarly to San Francisco there was a really cool music shop with live music next door. When we arrived there was a live show by "jazz legend" Ellis Marsalis,  we only saw the last song but it was pretty cool.

We pushed on but when we went for a sneaky pee in Wholefoods and I discovered that my face was really really red. Turns out walking into the sun all day will do that. We jumped on the bus back to the apartment so that we could cool down. Thankfully once I cooled down my face got less red!

Once we felt better we got changed and headed back out to celebrate "taco Tuesday" with cocktails and tacos at the Rum House. On our way we popped into a shop so K could buy a t she'd had her eye on and the girl working there was from London but went to uni in St Andrews then lived in Edinburgh so we had a good old chat with her. When we got to The Rum House it was mobbed due to their $2 per taco Tuesday deal. They said the wait would be between 60-90 mins but we decided to wait anyway. They gave us a pager and we went and sat outside the coffee shop across the road with an iced chai. A quick half hour later the pager went off and we were in!

We ordered some tacos a small manchego ceasar salad, some plantain and a side of mango coconut rice. We also ordered some key lime and coconut cocktails. The food actually came just before the cocktails cos the bar was so rammed but we had water to keep us going. The food was great, my favourite was rib meat with a creole sauce and poblano pepper. The cocktails arrived and they were amazing! Basically like a liquid key lime pie, I may have had a second one. We also may have ordered more tacos as pudding, maybe. Who's to say?

After we left the restaurant we were pretty full but we forced ourselves to go to Sucre as the ice cream was highly recommended. I got a scoop of toasted coconut with fudge and k got a scoop of toasted almond. We were too full to finish it but I'm glad we tried it.

We headed back to the apartment so that we could finish watching Raising Hope on Netflix before American Netflix is taken from us. I was glad to do our final walk home as the cockroaches scuttling about on the walk home has been my least favourite thing about New Orleans. Thankfully, we've not had any cockroaches in the apartment!

Back on the road tomorrow. Night y'all!

  1. Cockroaches are vile, especially the big ones. Urg! Looking forward to seeing ks new t. Sounds like a fun day all in, and like you got your bearings pretty quickly there. I like the buffy graveyard: why don't they bury folk though?
