Day 10 - New Orleans
We started the day late today as apparently New Orleans is that kind of town. We hopped on the bus into town and could tell already it was going to be roasting. We headed down to the banks of the Mississippi and wandered through Woldenberg Park towards Cafe Du Monde where we were having breakfast. We stopped at the Natchez Steamwheeler which had a Calliope music concert before it left which we LOVED.
We arrived at Cafe Du Monde and the queue was quite quick thankfully. We both ordered a portion of beignets (fried dough pillows covered in icing sugar ) and a cafe au lait made with chicory. They were brilliant but I did end up covered in icing sugar. The 3 people at the table next to us all held hands round the table and prayed before they ate theirs!
After breakfast we wandered about the French Market area, stopping in loads of shops. We tried a lot of praline samples! After wandering about for ages we stopped for a snowball to cool down. Snowballs are basically what slush puppies wish they were, the ice is super fine like snow. I had cherry with a condensed milk drizzle and K had grape. Fully delicious.
After more browsing we stopped for a wee beverage to cool down at Tujague's then headed over to Jackson Square. We stood and watched some buskers including a brilliant jazz band. Brass definitely wasn't that cool when I was in the brass band!
We wandered down Royal St, stopping for more buskers and shopping. It was really amazing just walking about soaking in the atmosphere and the buildings are all beautiful! We'd timed it it so we weren't hungry for lunch til after 3 as we wanted to go to Johnny's Po Boys as it is apparently crazy busy at lunch time. We rocked in and got a table straight away so the plan worked. We decided to share a roast beef po boy and a side of red beans and rice. It was lucky we did share cos it was crazy massive. It was so delicious, I could eat the po boy every day and be delighted. The beans and rice was great too, but not as good.
Our next stop was the fancy Carousel Bar, the bar is a Carousel (obviously) and rotates slowly (it takes 15 mins for each rotation). When we arrived there were no seats at the bar so we grabbed a table and willed people to leave. We were lucky and 2 guys left after 5 minutes and we managed to snag their seats, result! I had the veux carre and k had an old fashioned ($27!!). They were fully delicious and the experience was worth the cost, we only stayed for one drink though - we're not mental!
We decided it was time to see what Bourbon St was like so we headed up a couple of streets. It was completely different from the rest of the quarter which was touristy but lovely. It was rammed full of people getting wasted and lots of drink deals. We went to a bar that had a band on and even though it was only 5pm everyone was already wasted and dancing.
We decided on a change of pace so we hopped on the street car up to the massive City Park. The park was lovely and had a cool sculpture park in it. We stopped at a cool cafe called Morning Hall. We got a sea outside and relaxed with an iced coffee (me), chocolate milk (k) and a couple of beignets. The beignets were good but perhaps not just as good as the ones we had for breakfast. There were ducks going round the tables begging for scraps like dogs, K was delighted!
After enjoying the park some more we headed back in to town. We couldn't be bothered with Bourbon St again and we weren't hungry for dinner so we just headed back to Magazine St (where we're staying). We went to Dat Dog which is a hipster hotdog place and I had a beef dog with bacon and ranch and a local ipa and k just had some seasoned fries and a diet doctor pepper. After that we just headed back to the apartment and we're currently watching Raising Hope on Netflix.
Night y'all!
Bourbon Street sounds wild, I dread to think what would become of me there. At least you managed to wrangle a few cheap drinks after the expensive ones. Sounds like I'd kind of imagine it to be there, with all the music and laid back culture. The heavy religious stuff is pretty weird/intense though. Yey to the ducks - if have been delighted too.
