Day 1 - Travelling

A pretty uneventful day as we spent it in transit. We made pals with an older woman who was heading to Memphis and Nashville on our flight to London which was nice.

Our flight to Atlanta was super long but went smoothly. I watched Arrival, Moana and Keeping up with the Joneses and played lots of games. We managed to book the row with only 2 seats so we had some privacy which was nice. BA fed us well, honey chicken with sweet potato mash for out main meal then a coronation chicken sandwich and a scone with clotted cream and jam later on.

Unsurprisingly, our bags were practically last off of the carousel but at least they arrived! We've picked up our car and checked into tonight's hotel and now to bed as it's about 330am our time. It's the Hilton at the airport and it's pretty nice.

Day 17 - Birmingham to Atlanta to Glasgow

We slept a bit late and missed breakfast entirely but by 930 we were on the road to Atlanta. K was desperate for a french vanilla flavoured iced coffee and she'd scouted the location of some Pilot petrol stations off the Internet as she knew they did it. At the first one we got to the iced coffee machine was out of order, she was gutted but then said there was another Pilot 2 miles up the interstate so on we headed. The junction at the next one was mental cos it was near Talladega and there was a big nascar thing at the weekend. However, it was a success and the iced coffee was purchased. We also got a pack of crisps like cheetos crunchy but by Golden Flake who have their factory in Birmingham. Day 12 - New Orleans to Biloxi

This morning we had to pack up and leave our wonderful air bnb. Our New Orleans food quest hadn't quite finished because we hadn't had bananas foster yet. We decided that bananas fosters pancakes would be the way to go. We googled it and discovered that Another Broken Egg round the corner from the apartment had it on the menu so we headed straight there! We knew that we were going out for lunch today so we decided to split one portion but it was still tons (see photo, yes they came with bacon). We sat outside for breakfast but shortly after we left it started to rain a wee bit. We pushed on with a wee walk round the garden district to see some big houses including Anne Rice's house and the house from American Gothic. It was a lovely wee walk about. Lots of the houses have gas lights on the porch. When we got back in the car the rain got heavier then the thunder and lightening started. Day 15 - Pensacola to Birmingham

Following a quick hotel breakfast we were on the road North cos we had to cover a lot of ground today. We made the wise decision to wait til we crossed back over into Alabama to buy petrol cos it's cheaper here than in Florida. We filled up and K bought loads of caramel m&ms and the cashier was delighted - she definitely approved of the purchase. Back on the road and we were soon (not really) at Priester's Pecans. This is the most American of stops. A giant roadside extravaganza built round the humble pecan, it sells every pecan related product you can imagine - and lots you probably can't. The reason it is so wonderful is there are a lot of tasters, I particularly enjoyed the key lime pecans. There is also a massive shop selling all sorts of southern wares. There was a whole section of jesus tshirts! There's a restaurant too and an ice cream section - I may have had a wee scoop of butter pecan.
